The Cathedral Church of Encarnación is one of the monuments that are landmarks of the capital of the Department of Itapúa.
The construction of the current temple began in 1928, for which prominent residents of the city organized various charitable activities in order to gather part of the funds demanded by the monumental work. A couple of anecdotal data: the bricks for construction were brought from Areguá by train and the work was interrupted in 1932 due to lack of funds, but in September 1937 the work was intensively resumed until its conclusion.

The opening ceremony, the chronicles of that time recall, was attended by Monsignor Agustín Rodríguez, Diocesan Bishop of Villarrica, in whose jurisdiction this region was located.
Another date that marked the future of the Cathedral was January 19, 1957, when the elevation of the Parish to Prelature was arranged, remembering Monsignor Juan Wiesen as the 1st Prelate of Itapúa.
For the celebrations of the Bicentennial of Independence, the lighting of its facade was added, which offers unique and impressive views.
